A tragic reminder

It's been an emotional week in motor sport where two accidents have occurred, first the loss of a young and talented driver, Henry Surtees in Formula 2, at Brands hatch. A crash ahead of Surtees threw a wheel across the track direct into his path colliding with his helmet. Surtees just 18 years of age, with what looked to be a promising career ahead of him, died later that day in hospital, we offer our condolences to his family.

And second, a nasty accident in yesterdays Formula 1 qualifying session, this time involving Felipe Massa was struck on the helmet by a piece of debris that flew off the rear suspension of fellow Brazilian Rubens Barrichello's Brawn car took a huge chunk out of Massa's helmet and knocked him unconscious.

After being air lifted to hospital Massa endured an hour long operation to repair a skull fracture. Other injuries suffered were severe cuts to his face and eye. Now under anesthetic we hope he recovers soon, but this is a reminder that motor sport is dangerous, so remember to play it safe, listen to your briefings at track days and remember helmets and other safety precautions are for a very good reason.

Tramontana R

This is pretty much a first for our Welsh based blog which is normally focusing around all things drift, but something caught my eye this week which I feel I need to share, think of the old supercars such as the Jaguar e-type, Aston Martin DB5 and even those further back in history...then work your way up through to the present time taking note on how much each supercar has changed in both style and performance.

Now in 2009 we can see that supercars are really in your face, especially this one...from a Spanish company a car called The Tramontana, we are not going to tell you about this car as you can watch the UK's first ever review on the last episode of Fifth Gear this Monday at 8pm on Five.

Instead...I'm going to do a little show and tell on it's evolution...the Tramontana R, using a Mercedes-sourced 5.5-liter V12 available in either naturally aspirated, 550hp or a twin-turbocharged 760hp version that makes a pretty impressive 811lb-ft of torque, 50/50 weight distribution, 20" carbon fiber and magnesium wheels with 380mm Brembos, not to mention it's carbon body it's certainly something we would like in action, once again I'm not going to say too much as viewing is always better than reading, so be sure to watch Fifth Gear this coming Monday (27th), and instead i will leave you with a few pictures, enjoy!

EDC Licencing Session July '09

When the opportunity for the chance to have a go at obtaining an EDC licence came up I thought should I? I thought sod it lets have a go! So I booked the day off work ready for the day.

I booked it with the thought of not getting a licence but trying to find out how far I am from being at a standard able to compete with Europe's top drifters.

Well in preparation for this we discovered a few issues with the car, a smoking turbo and a clutch that was more liable to slip more than the rear tyres (ideal when trying to prove yourself at this high level of drifting!). Anyway no time or money to fix so this is what have to go with.

So then it came down to the day of judgement, was almost a little nervy! Anyway a nice relaxed morning as licencing wasn't until 4pm so about lunchtime I headed to my tyre man to get fresh rubber (Cheers James @ A&K tyres, Legend) . Spent a little too long chatting and suddenly it was 2pm so thought it was best to leave, damn I wish I had sooner the traffic on the M25 was crazy.

Arriving at Santa Pod just after 5pm wasn't the best thing to do in preparation for the following events. I missed the 1st practice and the track walk and was fairly flustered from my mad rush to get there, not good. I decided that rather than wasting time changing tyres I would use the ones I arrived on so to the queue I go.

My first lap, I decided to just drive the first lap to get a feel for it being as I had 't seen it or knew anything about it. Going into the first corner I noticed a massive bump in the track, after the bump there is a long sweeping right hand bend slowing down into a real tight hairpin. Coming out into a left hand bend in front of the stands into an "s" bend to finish apart from the bumpy surface a nice track.

The start of the next run I tried to add some speed and a little commitment, not enough mind you as I straightened after initiating. Quickly realising a half hearted approach to this track will involve either achieving nothing or an unexpected visit to one of the many concrete barriers strewn around the track i thought i had better buck my ideas up!

I had my next run which I entered the first bend at the top of 3rd hit the bump on the first corner real hard, felt like the car was going over. Quickly back on the power to continue the drift it became apparent that the car was down on power as it really was bogging down in 3rd. Trying to kick the clutch it just slipped as I was losing momentum I grabbed 2nd which got the rear end back out going into the hairpin, at least salvaging something. I completed the rest of the course without drama feeling a little more confident in knowing the track after that run.

On return to the pits I thought I should check my tyres, looked and saw they were on their last legs after 3 runs! Jeeez that's serious tyre wear, the next prob I had was the tyres I had got used to were the 225/45/17's I had on but only had some 205/50/16's to replace them ready on wheels.

To top it off I was told it's time for licencing, after 3 runs? Hardly likely to get one! Licencing is judged over 5 laps. Speed, lines and consistency are all focused on with Maz judging the complete package it's not going to be easy........

So the 1st judged run, with the new tyres I was getting barely any traction so initiating into the first bend I carried to much speed and span. No score!

On to the second judged run , initiating into the first bend the handbrake didn't lock properly and ended up throwing me the wrong way towards he concrete barrier at near 75 - 80 mph. I was a lucky boy stopping inches from redesigning the front of my car.

My next 3 runs ranged from ok to inconsistent, but none making the grade.

It turns out nobody had enough on the day as no licences were given out, although I think all feedback from Maz was constructive and will be taken on board.

I look forward to my next opportunity, hopefully with a bit more luck and better preparation!

Falken Dice Rolling, Las Vegas

Here's a funky vid from the US Falken team

Ken Block who?

This is one of the many spoofs made after Ken Blocks gymkhana videos which made me chuckle. Enjoy.

British Drift Championship - Promo

This video just about sums up the BDC for me, enjoy.

Drifting for Charity

Ok this is my first ever blog post so bare with my newbie blogging skills.

I was recently invited to attend a National Skyline Owners day at Llandow race circuit in South Wales. I was also joined by fellow NightWalker Danny O’Brien who was also driving, along with Mason taking photographs of the action.

The reason for the invite was to provide passenger rides around the track to raise money for a local charity - Felindre Cancer Care. As a pro driver in the BDC I jumped at the chance to gain some practice at the track as a few weeks later Round 2 of the BDC would take place there, I was also proud to be raising money for such a good cause.

The day went really well and I was enjoying driving, not to mention the numerous passengers I took out for laps, who went out smiling and came back looking white as a sheet. I must have been driving like someone possessed. As always things were going a little too smoothly, then after the lunch break I went back out fully recharged and began driving a bit more aggressively when all of a sudden I was exiting the bustop chicane (one of the corners at Llandow circuit) up shifted into third gear and BANG, my gearbox bit the dust, I was truly gutted to say the least.
This being the first gear box I had broken since I started drifting brought me down from cloud 9. However, it wasn’t a total washout. After limping back to the pits I was told by the Skyline Owners chairman that we had raised somewhere in the region of £250, which I thought was fantastic.

Here are a few pics of the action

The fear of 13

One of the newest drivers of the team happens to be the one who makes the most impact, and in more ways than one as you'll see the further you read, the driver in question is Ian Williams otherly known as foot...before drifting Ian was taking part in Time Attack with his Mitsubishi EVO IV, but caught the bug and so evolved not only a new NightWalker...but also a now familiar S13.

For those outside of Wales you may recognise the car from Round 3 of the British Drift Championship, but for me the main memory of this car will be the first time it was used at a drift event, completely standard CA18DET but driven so hard a 309bhp BMW M3 could not get the prefacelift 13 out of it's rear view mirror.

Well on the "Making an impact" comment earlier, during a recent visit to Santa Pod Ian had a bit of bad luck, after nailing the track all day and the car not missing a beat, the luck of the Welsh proved to be non existent in the sense of the car doing 90mph in 4th, down into 3rd and shift lock and then hitting a pot hole, sending the car in the opposite direction and into one of the 1.5 - 2 ton concrete blocks, which got knocked back a good few feet, when talking to foot his comment was "I didn't event have time to say OH F**K, i only got to OH FU", some photos now to finish off...

Does NightWalkers only have Jap?

Simple answer to this question would be no!

However, rather than answer with a simple response I feel I should explain and convince you that despite most's opinion that drift and Japanese are the best combination you actually have lots of choice, one I would like to see more of is a bit of German.

Amongst the team we have a few BMW's, one that sticks out and breathes in attention is Goose's BMW E36 M3, this is a car I was familiar with back when I had my BMW E30 as this car was previously owned by a mate, but it never got driven how it should be...this changed when Goose took ownership and began the transformation, from a standard M3 it's now possibly the most aggressive sounding car in the team, complete with all the modifications needed to bring it up to BDC pro spec, and what we all notice most...it's new wheels with epic fitment, the 10j (rear) kontours, if words are not enough to convince you to appreciate other marquees in the drift scene, then perhaps some photos will help...

Pre-season Vinyl Session

Here's a bit of retrospective post, before the 2009 British Drift Championship kicked off the first of the Nightwalkers cars was stickered up ready for its Round 1 debut at Donington park.

The guys at Ace Image UK ventured down to deepest, darkest West Wales to taff*tune for a weekend of painstaking work applying the livery to Chris Hackwoods S14. Just over a day later and the car was looking mint!

Sunset Banana.

A while back I went for a drive out over the hills of West Wales and found myself in the middle of some rather cool scenery so I shot a few pictures, here are some of the results.

Welcome back...a legend!

At 8:36pm tonight i get a phone call from fellow NightWalker Woody, who to those of us that own S13's is seen as a bit of a god, while his car was off the road for those many months he did nothing but help out his fellow team mates, karma must have appreciated this and made the word a better place...better but not as safe.

Reason for this is simple, the phone call was to say his S13 is back on the road and on route to my house, before he even got to the area i heard loud bangs and what can only be described as the note of Satan being strangled by an obese woman with PMT, as an employee at our very good friends LongLife it just shows the quality of his work, much to my neighbors anger, welcome back Woody!
